What Is Documentary Family Photography? And why does it matter?

TD;DR here

The different styles of photography, which one suits you, and finding your perfect photographer…

You might have heard the phrase ‘documentary photographer’ or ‘motherhood photographer’ thrown around more and more recently. That’s because the style is massively growing in popularity. Whilst some families still prefer a posed portrait to hang on their wall, as we progress away from the age of insta-perfect online photos, many families are choosing a more relaxed and authentic approach to capturing memories.

As with most photography, styles vary and so do skills. So, here’s a guide to documentary family photography and how to choose the perfect photographer for your family’s story.

The difference between traditional, lifestyle, & documentary family photography.

Traditional family photography is what most of us think of when we talk about family portraits. It often means posed portraits, perfect backdrops, and on-que smiles.

Lifestyle photography tends to be a little more relaxed; no studio, but still curated outfits, and a mix of prompts and posing. Great if you want the posed style but have young kids who need to be ‘doing’ a little more than just posing.

Documentary photography is about creating something a little less ‘perfect’ and a little more meaningful.

It’s about telling your story through real, unscripted moments. Sessions tend to be home based, but some photographers, like me, also offer location shoots at places meaningful to you.

The result is photo’s that are a little less…

‘I wish my hair looked that perfect every day.”

And a little more…

“Hey, remember that?”

The Art of Capturing Real-Life Family Moments

Whilst studio photographers might specialise in creating the perfect lighting and lifestyle photographers work to find the perfect prompts. Specialist documentary style photographers adapt on the go.

Every session is unique, in a brand-new setting, with unique lighting, activities, and connections. Whether it’s a morning snuggle, a messy mealtime, or a quiet afternoon at home, photographers like me tell the story of your life as it really is.

This approach provides unique challenges for photographers who must be able to switch up their camera settings and spot artistic composures on the go, without curation or planning. That’s why, if you love the idea of candid documentary photography for your family, I highly recommend looking for a photographer with qualifications and who specialises in the style.

Cough, cough…like me 👀

The Beauty of Authentic Family Photography: Why Real-Life Moments Matter

One of the greatest aspects of documentary family photography is its ability to help create memories as well as capture them. It’s not just about the photos, it’s about how they make you feel.

Ever had a photo where you look stunning , but all you remember is how uncomfortable you were in that awful shapewear?

What about one where the ocean breeze has you eating half of your hair, but when you look at the image you’re flooded with memories of your eldest’s magical first day at the beach?

Life can be messy, chaotic, and imperfect, but it’s also filled with moments of love, laughter, and connection. By choosing documentary photography, you’re choosing to celebrate and remember these moments exactly as they are.

Not just for you... but for them.

Is Documentary Family Photography the Best Choice for Capturing Your Family’s Story?

There are lots of reasons to choose documentary family photography over traditional posed photos and lifestyle shoots. Ultimately, what it comes down too, is personal preference. From the style of photos to finding what fits your family’s budget, and the experience you want to remember. It’s not just about finding the best photographer, although their experience, qualifications, and quality of work should be a factor, it’s also about finding the right photographer for you.

If you’re looking for:

Images that hold Memories

Think about the family photo albums that you grew up looking at, but with fewer rock perms and fingers that crept over the lens. They weren’t a collection of perfect portraits and we loved them all the more for it. Rather than forcing smiles and stiff poses, this style captures the real emotions and genuine moments that define your family.

Stress-Free Family Photography Sessions

Traditional photo sessions can sometimes feel stressful, especially if kids aren’t in the mood to “smile!” If partners are reluctant or pets are involved getting nice family photos can seem almost impossible. If you’re looking for a style that lets you relax and just enjoy the moment rather than adding to the stress, documentary family photography might be the right choice for you. There’s no need for everyone to be perfectly posed, in the right mood, or following directions. Just be yourselves!

Capture the Everyday Magic of Family Life

Those little moments that matter, the ones that you see, and the ones that you don’t because you’re busy making sure they have everything they need… Documentary family photography captures all of them. From magic kisses on scraped knees to mischievous sibling teamwork, the magic is in the moment.

How Documentary Family Photography Sessions Work

This is where there is a similarity to traditional shoots in that every photographer is different. Some are ‘book and shoot’, others separate the cost of their session and your images.

I’ve designed my process to be as easy and stress free as my sessions. So, here’s what you can expect from me.

One price. Everything included

There’s nothing worse than finding an affordable photographer only to find out after viewing the photos that the price you paid was just for the session. If you want to keep any of your images, even digitally, it’s going to cost you waaay more.

Having been a mum in that situation, looking at beautiful photos of my kids that I didn’t realise I couldn’t afford to keep, I knew that I wanted to do things differently.

Every session I offer from minis, to classic, to events includes ALL your images and a selection of prints. Always.

Your welcome pack

Step one for minis is to book your slot, for classic sessions and for event’s it’s to get in touch via my enquiry form. As soon as you’re all booked in, I’ll send you your welcome pack.

Welcome packs vary depending on what kind of session you’re booking, but they may include:

  • A little note from me

  • Details of the session and delivery timeline so you know exactly what to expect

  • A thoughtful questionnaire designed to help you visualise your dream session

  • Recommended local small businesses and small vendors for events

  • A print guide for if you chose to print memories at home in the future

  • Access to the client print portal so you can start planning your included print products

  • Tips and guides on how to plan and prepare for your session without the stress

  • My contact information incase you have any questions

Your Pre-Session Consultation

The first step, (for classic and event) before your session happens, is to plan it. Now, that doesn’t mean discussing outfits and sifting through reference pictures. If you’re booking a classic session we meet at your home. For events, ideally, we’ll meet at the event space. We’ll chat about your family’s personalities, how you love to spend time together, and any important moments you’d like to capture. This helps me tailor your session to your family and ensure that the images we capture tell your story.

Your session

The not so big day! During your session: you do you. Whether that means family time at home, adventures at the beach, or celebrating a special milestone. It’s like inviting a friend; just one who happens to be holding a camera.

With no strict poses or instructions to follow it can feel strange at first and some families take a few moments to ‘settle’ with the camera, but that’s exactly why my sessions are longer than trad-shoots. Once the focus is off the camera and back on each-other, I’ll quietly capture the real-life moments that happen around you… the joy, laughter, and the quiet moments that make your family unique.

Your magical memories, to keep forever.

I vividly remember sitting in a studio once, as a client, looking at my beautiful photos, feeling super blessed and happy with the results, only for it to come crashing down when I found out that the $600 I paid was just the studio fee, and if I wanted to keep any of my photos, even digitally, it was going to cost me at least another $1,000!

I was devastated.

That’s why all of my clients receive All of their images… Always.

  • First, in your private digital gallery, where you can download and share to your hearts content. You’ll receive a link to yours within 4-6 weeks of your session.

  • Then in your print-ready USB that’s included in every session. It gives you a safe place to store all your digital file and lets you print your own photos easily via the client print portal or at home.

  • Finally, I’ll get in touch to help you chose your print package which is already included in the cost of your session. Once my pro-lab partners work their magic with your selections, I personally hand deliver your printed products, because A) I am not ok with your memories being left out in the cold by the postie, and B) because I love seeing the joy it brings.

Every memory, yours to keep, forever.
