Don’t get me wrong, I love the colour depth and quality of a professional print. But the truth is, you don’t always need to break the bank to get beautiful results. Home prints: Why DIY isn’t always cheaper.

Most of us have some kind of office printer in our home, and with photo paper so widely available, it can be tempting to try to print your own photos at home. I don’t recommend it, and here’s why:

Most office printers are not capable of printing high quality photos
Dedicated photo printers can be expensive and require calibration to print true colours
By the time you’ve got the printer, paper, and wasted half of your supplies on calibration, you could have used a high-street printer for less and gotten a better result.

Save yourself the money, time, and stress. Even I, a trained and qualified photographer, don’t print my own photos at home.

Professional prints are typically produced in a high-end printing studio using top-tier equipment. This includes high-quality paper options, archival inks, and custom framing. They usually offer more depth in colour and sharper images, but to make the most of professional prints you need to know how to convert different colour spaces and the effects of gamut. The photos taken on your i-phone probably aren’t suited to make the most of pro-lab print capabilities. Professional prints are better suited to professional images taken, edited, and optimised for printing by a photographer.

High Street Prints: Affordable Quality for Everyday Photos

On the other hand, high street printers offer more budget-friendly printing options. And to be clear, I’m not just talking about Kmart, many of the online printers available to the public are considered ‘high-street’ by pro-lab standards. With that said, while the materials may not be as luxurious as professional prints, many high street services offer surprisingly good quality, especially for smaller print sizes like 5x7 or 8x10. These prints can still look amazing framed and hung in your home, but you get them for a fraction of the cost.

For families on a budget or for everyday photos taken on your phone, this is often a perfect solution without sacrificing image quality for everyday prints.

How to Maximise Your Budget for High-Quality Prints

If you want to keep your costs low while still getting high-quality prints, here's my advice:

Use your print size guide: High street printers provide a range of sizes from standard album prints to more unique products. By following the included print size guide, you can easily select the right dimensions for your prints to ensure they look great in frames.
Stick to Popular Print Sizes: Certain print sizes (like 8x10, 5x7, or 11x14) are often cheaper, so focus on these standard options for framing around your home.
Choose Matte or Satin Finishes for a professional looking print.

When Should You Consider Professional Prints?

While high street prints are perfect for most families, there are times when professional prints may be worth the investment. If you’ve invested in professional photography or you're planning to display a large statement piece like a big canvas or a framed print for your living room, professional prints can provide superior depth, quality, and longevity. But, and this is a big one, always order professional and large prints through a photographer. If your image isn’t the right size or the colour spaces aren’t converted properly, you will end up paying professional prices for less than high-street quality and it won’t be the lab’s fault.

If you do need professional prints, I offer affordable and easy ordering through my client print portal, but when it comes to smaller prints of everyday images for sharing with family, high street printers often offer great value.

Why Print Sizes Matters

Size can make all the difference in how your photos look on display. Larger prints often have a more dramatic effect, but the size and ratio of your image decides how big you can go before the quality starts to decline.

If you’re printing photos from me, whether you’re ordering prints through the lab or the high street, you can always check your image files against your print size guide.

If you’re printing photos from another photographer or taken at home, right click on your image, scroll to ‘show more options’ then ‘properties’ and click the ‘details’ tab. Check the image dimensions there against the recommended maximum in px from your chosen printers’ guidelines.

Remember, you don’t have to go big to make an impact. Choosing smaller prints allows you to curate your photos into a collection that tells a story. You can group several prints in different sizes, creating a collage of beautiful moments on your walls that don’t require an expensive price tag.
